For 20 plus years John has focused on the use of biomass in western homes and communities. He has worked with both the pellet appliance industry and the pellet fuel manufacturing industry, interfacing with western communities and forest interests. John has been especially focused on the air quality impacts of thermal biomass, and has worked closely with the U.S. EPA and with state air agencies in western states. John’s field experience has included two large multi-agency programs designed to replace large numbers of old wood stoves with new EPA-compliant wood stoves and pellet stoves. Most recently, between 2005 and 2008, he organized the replacement of over 1,000 old wood stoves in the town of Libby, Montana. This was a joint effort involving the solid fuel burning appliance industry, the town of Libby, Lincoln County, the State of Montana’s air quality division, and the U.S. EPA’s, regional and national offices. John’s role in the project involved organizing the households and assisting in locating and advising local staff who supervised the replacement of the individual appliances.
